Con el objetivo de ponderar la importancia de este derecho humano fundamental, el 27 de octubre se conmemora el D\u00eda Internacional de la Libertad Religiosa.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sobre este particular, los testigos de Jehov\u00e1 tienen un largo historial de luchas legales por proteger su valioso derecho a la libertad de culto. Desde 1919, han obtenido 50 victorias ante el Tribunal Supremo de los Estados Unidos y han superado ese n\u00famero ante el Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos y el Comit\u00e9 de Derechos Humanos de las Naciones Unidas. Como resultado, han establecido un fundamento de jurisprudencia para la libertad religiosa en todo el mundo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El director del Departamento de Asuntos Legales en la sede mundial de esta organizaci\u00f3n religiosa afirm\u00f3 lo siguiente: \u201cLos testigos de Jehov\u00e1 no buscan batallas legales, solo quieren servir a Dios en paz\u201d. Luego a\u00f1adi\u00f3: \u201cPero cuando las circunstancias los obligan a ponerse firmes y decir: \u2018No voy a hacer esto\u2019 o \u2018Tengo que hacer esto porque mi conciencia educada por la Biblia me lo pide\u2019, es impresionante ver el temple de acero con el que miran a los ojos a los jueces, magistrados y oficiales de polic\u00eda, y simplemente les dicen: \u2018Tengo que obedecer a Dios\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En Argentina, durante la \u00faltima dictadura militar, pesaba sobre los Testigos una prohibici\u00f3n a sus actividades que resultaba en encarcelamiento a objetores de conciencia al servicio militar o la expulsi\u00f3n de las escuelas a hijos de miembros de esta religi\u00f3n. Pero el 10 de octubre de 1978, la Comisi\u00f3n Interamericana de Derechos Humanos resolvi\u00f3 que el gobierno hab\u00eda vulnerado los derechos humanos de los testigos de Jehov\u00e1 y recomend\u00f3 que se levantara la proscripci\u00f3n. El 12 de diciembre de 1980, el gobierno militar de facto acept\u00f3 la recomendaci\u00f3n y suspendi\u00f3 la proscripci\u00f3n. Finalmente, el 9 de marzo de 1984 se dio reconocimiento legal a la Asociaci\u00f3n de los Testigos de Jehov\u00e1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConsideramos muy valiosa la obra de educaci\u00f3n b\u00edblica que realizamos\u201d, dijo Marcos Donad\u00edo, portavoz nacional de los Testigos. \u201cNunca damos por sentada nuestra libertad de participar en esa actividad, porque tenemos claro que se estableci\u00f3 gracias al inmenso esfuerzo que hicieron muchos de nuestros compa\u00f1eros de creencia en el pasado.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actualmente, se libran batallas legales en pa\u00edses como Eritrea donde el gobierno ha arrestado, encarcelado y maltratado a testigos de Jehov\u00e1 sin haberlos juzgado o sin haber presentado cargos formales. Lo ha hecho tan solo por participar en actividades religiosas o por razones que no han sido reveladas. Entre ellos hay mujeres y personas mayores que son encarcelados en condiciones severas y algunos incluso han muerto como consecuencia del trato inhumano que recibieron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De manera similar, los Testigos contin\u00faan litigando en los tribunales de Rusia; pa\u00eds que ha declarado \u201cextremistas\u201d sus publicaciones, ha prohibido su sitio web oficial y ha confiscado sus centros de adoraci\u00f3n y propiedades.
